Religious Education
Intent
The work we do in R.E. is very much linked to our RESPECT curriculum. We teach the children that R.E. stands for Respect Everyone, not just for Religious Education. We want our pupils to listen to each other, communicate their thoughts and show empathy when their peers share their ideas.
Our children live in a diverse world and we have examples of many faiths in our school community. We believe that it is vital for children to find out about how people in the world differ in their thoughts and beliefs. By understanding the differences between us they can then develop tolerance and understanding and become accepting and respectful members of our school community and society as a whole. By learning about the beliefs of others, children can then begin to think about their own values and beliefs. Whether they have a faith or none, by learning about others they start to question what is important to them personally and what values they feel they need to follow as they live their everyday lives. By asking questions about the world around them they challenge their own thinking and come to a better understanding about what matters to them as a person.
Implementation
At Elton we are now following the new Bury RE Agreed Syllabus which was introduced in 2021, we are very excited to be using this new high-quality resource. The syllabus is designed to support schools in developing and delivering excellence in RE. It aims to deepen pupils’ knowledge about religions and develop their ‘religious literacy’. The religions we study are Christianity, Islam and Judaism. We learn about what followers of those religions believe and how they celebrate and show what matters to them in their everyday lives. The children study one religion at a time, they then build on this knowledge by comparing religions, beliefs and practices. Topics are taught and then returned to later on to build on knowledge and understanding and to ensure progression.
The syllabus focuses on three core elements, which are woven together to provide breadth and balance within teaching and learning. These elements are:
- Making sense of belief
- Understanding the impact
- Making connections
Impact
Religious Education contributes dramatically to children’s education because it challenges them to think about meaning and purpose in life, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. R.E. lessons provide an opportunity to articulate clearly what they think and believe in a safe space where they know their ideas will be listened to and respected. It also helps them to become supportive listeners who know that everyone has the right to their own opinion. We hope that our children will gain a better understanding of their own thoughts and feelings and will develop a greater respect and empathy of their peers. They learn the important lesson that people don’t agree about lots of issues and that we can disagree respectfully and with tolerance.
